1. Differentiate the medical and surgical causes of chronic mouth breathing in children (adenotonsillar hypertrophy, allergic rhinitis, nasal obstruction, and OSA) and identify the clinical scenarios that require physician-led evaluation and otolaryngology referral rather than non-physician airway intervention alone.
2. Describe the age-stratified consequences of chronic mouth breathing from obligate nasal breathing and feeding/respiratory compromise in infancy, to craniofacial and dentofacial remodeling and OSA in early childhood, to malocclusion, oral-functional, and neurobehavioral effects in older children and adolescents.
3. Apply an evidence-based approach to screening for and triaging pediatric mouth breathing, including use of validated screening tools and appropriate criteria for medical management versus referral.
