Overview

This activity addresses clinical, communication, and emotional challenges that arise when disease-directed therapies are no longer beneficial. Learners are educated on recognizing transition points in care, communicating prognosis and uncertainty, aligning treatment with patient goals, integrating palliative care principles, and managing professional moral distress and burnout.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Articulate when disease-directed therapy is no longer beneficial.
  2. Determine when to consider alternative, unproven or experimental therapies.
  3. Communicate prognosis and uncertainty effectively.
  4. Transition patients to goal-concordant care.
  5. Integrate palliative care principles into routine practice.
  6. Manage personal and professional distress in these situations.
